Season four closed the book on a fantastic animated series that adds further credence to the viability, relevance, and quality that can be created in animation.
3 Continued Evidence For Animation’s Relevance
An original protagonist, or even having Soma Cruz in the futuristic 2035 Aria of Sorrow setting is in the cards. Christopher, Simon, and Richter Belmont are all viable–with Alucard’s possible return–but things can get wilder. Granted, while doable, having Dracula succumb to madness again could come off as lazy and cruel, but there’s plenty of room for creativity. The main trio, Isaac, Hector, and Carmilla get great conclusions, and these first five received emotionally resonant closing arcs that feel earned and don’t end so bitterly and cruelly for the sake of darkness or subversion. It does well by even giving bright, hopeful, and optimistic endings to them, which might come as a surprise given the dark fantasy genre. Saint Germain or Lenore–but by episode 10 there’s a nice bow tied on an exceptional series. There are some that unfortunately don’t get enough breathing room in screen time to quite stick the landing as strong as they could’ve–i.e. Visuals aside, another aspect that makes season four as great as it is is how it does well to satisfyingly conclude several key characters’ story arcs spanning from season one/two to the finale. Carmilla was among the most notable, and Trevor/Sypha/Alucard in episode nine felt like a dungeon run with mini-bosses leading up to the final fight with Trevor vs. Season 3 did this in the aforementioned Trevor fight, but season 4 ramped that up. The art and animation blend in fantastic fashion, but how they’re choreographed is giddily reminiscent of actual video game boss fights.

The Netflix TV series is obviously an adaptation, since the source material is in the gaming arena. Isaac’s fight against Carmilla and basically all of episode nine with the main trio easily comes to mind and will never be forgotten. Season four essentially shows degrees of that quality in every episode, with certain sequences standing out over others, which says a lot given how everything is such a jaw-dropping spectacle. It’s strong season-to-season, but before four’s premiere, three in particular gave fans a taste of the insanely high potential the studio could reach during Trevor’s fight against the Visitor. To complete the visual feast of the season, animation somehow manages to look even slicker, smoother and wonderfully chaotic in the heat of action. Going hand-in-hand with the artistic style used is the quality of animation.
